The government is spying on you - What's the big deal?

Recent polls show that, despite the Senate's torture report, most Americans still support the Central Intelligence Agency's use of torture on suspects. Obviously the mainstream media misinform the public, neglecting to tell them that such torture techniques do not even produce reliable information and are mainly used to extract false confessions from innocent detainees.

And on the National Security Agency's spying on innocent Americans, people love it, and then they hate it, and now they're back toloving it again. Alas, Most people are ignorant of the actual criminality being committed by the federal goons.

But one American who shows enthusiastic support for NSA intrusions, a Federal Appeals Court judge, says that privacy is "overvalued," and that "much of what passes for the name of privacy is really just trying to conceal the disreputable parts of your conduct." If some unauthorized individual intruded into his cell phone, one would find a picture of the judge's cat and some emails.

"What's the big deal?" Judge Richard Posner asked, contemptuously wisecracking, "Other people must have really exciting stuff. Do they narrate their adulteries, or something like that?"

So, yeah, he's all for NSA spying on innocent people without any reason to suspect them of anything.

He is one of those, "well, if you have nothing to hide. . ." kinds of judges, so people should just let government goons have complete access into all their personal information. After all, it's in the name of "security" and to protect us from "terrorism."

Never mind the fact that the government and its enforcers having the power to search people's cell phones, get information on their calls and emails or search their cars and homes is a power which makes the people less secure. And that is the kind of power which enables government tyrants to terrorize the people, as Michael Rozeff correctly noted.

But the obedient defenders of the State and its sick criminality seem to assume that the NSA and other State enterprises such as CIA,TSA, etc., really are protecting people from terrorism.

Like DC District Court Judge Rosemary Collyer, who rules based on not wanting to "second-guess" the CIA and its authoritarian judgments, Judge Posner believes that we needn't second-guess the NSA, as its agents' authority and judgment ought not be questioned.

So, what kinds of security-protecting deeds have the good folks at the NSA actually been doing that we shouldn't be concerned about? Well, according to Glenn Greenwald, we know that the GCHQ (Britain's NSA equivalent) presented the NSA with classified documents on GCHQ's own sleazy tactics of posting false material on the Internet to destroy reputations and turn people against one another. And GCHQ's main targets are not even alleged "terrorists" but private companies just doing business, and political activists.

That sure sounds like they are protecting us from terrorism, if you ask me.

And, according to James Ball of the U.K. Guardian, we know that NSA and GCHQ have been infiltrating online gaming networks such as Xbox Live and World of Warcraft to collect gamers' buddylists, profile photos, geolocation information and chats. But Ball notes that there is no evidence that such gaming network infiltration has thwarted any terrorism plots or even that members of any terror groups actually use these kinds of gaming networks.

A main purpose of such warrantless Internet intrusions is to put together biometric information of gamers and others. Governments just love to have as much information on each individual as possible such as biometric information that includes facial recognition photos, location, personal associations, etc., despite the overwhelming number of false positive matches and incorrect facial recognition results those databases give officials. Such databases of personally identifying information are just as unreliable as fingerprint databases and DNA testing as well.

But Judge Posner says, "What's the big deal?"

And according to Glenn Greenwald, the NSA uses a tool called XKeyscore to collect "nearly everything a user does on the Internet." With XKeyscore all the NSA agent needs is a user's email address or IP address, and is only required to fill out a form giving some general rationalization for such criminal intrusions that don't even require a warrant. Greenwald notes that NSA agents "can also search by name, telephone number, IP address, keywords, the language in which the internet activity was conducted or the type of browser used."

Obviously, Judge Posner is very comfortable with all this. He isn't exactly doing a Danny Thomas spit-take when hearing about all this stuff. What could possibly go wrong? And there are many other Americans who don't mind their personal lives being an open book for the government, despite so much potential for abuse, such as blackmail.

But the truth is, only the most naive and gullible could endorse such powers of intrusion wielded by the State. (Or someone who has been blackmailed, of course.)

As the ACLU has pointed out, J. Edgar Hoover and his FBI and the Chicago Police Department used private, personal information to intentionally blackmail politicians and members of religious and political organizations. I'm sure other law enforcement agencies and bureaus have been doing exactly that since the days of J. Edgar Hoover and 1970s Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley.

From an interview with Peter B. Collins, Washington's Blog quotes NSA whistleblower Russell Tice, stating that the NSA has been spying on and targeting "high-ranking military officers; they went after members of Congress ... lawyers and law firms. All kinds of - heaps of lawyers and law firms. They went after judges. One of the judges is now sitting on the Supreme Court that I had his wiretap information in my hand. Two are former FISA court judges. They went after State Department officials. They went after people in the executive service that were part of the White House ..."

And Washington's Blog also quotes other government whistleblowers such as William Binney, Sibel Edmonds and Thomas Drake as to the various blackmail schemes of these criminal government spy agencies.

The NSA, FBI, CIA - the agents of all these bureaucracies take oaths and swear to obey the U.S. Constitution, which includes the Bill of Rights, yet they seem to violate such oaths every chance they can. (Oh, wait - CIA Director John Brennan took his oath of office using an earlydraft Constitution, without the Bill of Rights included. Never mind, as Emily Litella would say.)

But there are some CIA or NSA employees who really do believe in upholding their Constitutional oaths. Former CIA officer and torture whistleblower John Kiriakou is the only CIA officer in prison - not because of torturing people, but because of revealing informationabout the CIA's torture.

But Kiriakou in an interview asserted that the CIA clearly didn't care about his possibly revealing classified information, as they encouraged him to write op-eds and do interviews as a way to use such communications against him even though information he gave was cleared through the agency.

Kriakou concluded throughout his ordeal that "everyone is corrupt" in that agency. Or most everyone, that is. And the same thing is probably the case in all these other criminal agencies, NSA and so on.

I just can't imagine anyone with a moral conscience actually inflicting the kinds of sick, deranged and sadistic torment on others as CIA agents have committed.

And I can't imagine anyone, such as NSA personnel, with any moral conscience actually listening in on people, recording or videotaping them, breaking into their emails of phone calls or their cars or bedrooms without any suspicion, and "digging up some dirt" to use against innocent people including judges and military generals.

But "if you have nothing to hide ..." as some judges have asserted, you should be okay with goons watching you and recording your actions. Alas, those who guard themselves against criminal intrusions and attempt to protect their private lives are labeled as "suspicious" in the eyes of the State and its statist defenders, toadies and dupes.

Sadly, "those who resist being inventoried present a problem for the state," as Wendy McElroy observed.

Yes, honest and moral people are a problem for the State.

As McElroy points out, there should be one standard of morality. If it's wrong for your neighbors to dig into your private life, it's wrong for government agents.

To cure the problem, NSA whistleblower William Binney and several other well-intentioned government whistleblowers have presented 21 recommendations toward reforming the NSA. But the truth is, it is impossible to reform an agency that is part of a monopolistic governmental "security" apparatus, unless it is de-monopolized and we remove restrictions on free competition.

In any case, Future of Freedom Foundation President Jacob Hornberger has the best solution I've ever heard: Abolish the NSA.

And the CIA has outlived whatever usefulness it may have had after World War II, so we should get rid of that, too.

In fact, as Hornberger has suggested , it really is the entire evil National Security State that has long ago outlived whatever usefulness it may have had after World War II. So the real solution to restoring freedom and security is to thoroughly dismantle the entire National Security State apparatus , root and branch.

Local people terrorized by unusual explosion of venomous snakes in central Vietnam

A Quang Ngai resident is shown holding a green snake he has killed.

Dozens of people in Da Nang City, as well as Quang Nam and Quang Ngai Provinces, have been hospitalized recently after being bitten by the poisonous reptile 'rắn lục' (green snake), with the scientific name of .

The snake perfectly disguises itself around trees thanks to its green body. It is yellow or pale green below the eyes, while its belly is green, yellowish or white, and the end of the tail is brown or red.

The situation has reached such a dangerous level that the Department of Forest Management of Quang Ngai has asked local authorities to urgently begin a campaign to drive the animals out of local neighborhoods.

An odd increase in the number of venomous snakes

Within the last three days, locals in Chau O Town in Binh Son District of Quang Ngai have killed around 30 snakes.

The green snakes have appeared not only in gardens, but also in kitchens, bedrooms, kindergartens, hanging under roofs, and over school gates.

Nguyen Thi Nga, a resident in Binh Minh Commune of Binh Son District, said she discovered five green snakes in her house after one night.

"After getting up early one morning, I saw a green snake curled up on my dining table. I called my husband and he found four more in the corners of other rooms."

Phuoc Hoa Hamlet of Binh Tri Commune in Binh Son had four locals hospitalized within four days for snake bites, she added.

Nguyen Van Thao, a guard at the 23-4 kindergarten, was admitted to a local hospital after being bitten by a green snake last week.

Vo Van Dan, whose father was bitten by a green snake, said his fellow villagers killed seven such reptiles several days ago.

Pham Hung, vice chairman of the People's Committee of Chau O, said, "Green snakes appear even on the road. We already reported the odd growth in the number of green snakes to district level authorities."

The fourth zone in Phuoc My Ward in Da Nang's Son Tra District is a busy residential center, but it has become a 'rendezvous' for the snakes.

Local dwellers have to install tightly knit nets and roller blinds to surround their houses to prevent the snakes from getting in.

They have also applied folklore experience by grinding garlic, onions, and citronella grass to drop at gates and doors because they believe that the reptile fears the odors of the plants.

The Quang Ngai General Hospital has treated over 40 patients bitten by green snakes from the start of this month.

Vietnamese people, especially those in rural areas, are inclined to apply traditional herbal remedies for snake bites, and they have proved effective in many cases.

The green snake with a red tail is venomous and its poison can cause fatigue, breathing difficulty, dizziness, nausea, inflammation, and blood circulation problems. It requires long-term treatment to remove the poison from the body of a patient, said a doctor.

A bite from a green snake may kill a person, according to Doctor Doan Van Sen, vice director of Thang Binh Hospital in Quang Nam Province.

Killing the snakes is urgent work

Nguyen Van Han, head of the Quang Ngai forest management department, explained that the green snake population has grown and 'invaded' local neighborhoods because of low rainfall and no floods, creating favorable natural conditions for the reptile's eggs to hatch and multiply.

The odd increase in the population of the green snake and its invasion into residential areas all over the central region have never taken place before, even though they are native to this region, according to Duong Van To, director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Ngai.

"Eliminating green snakes from residential areas is now an urgent task here," said Pham Thanh Tung, chairman of the People's Committee of Mo Duc District in Quang Ngai.

"Initially, we will weed grass and bushes along streets," he added.

More than 30 earthquake tremors hit Italy's Chianti region

© Konrad Lawson

The epicentre of the strongest quake was nine kilometres below ground close to Greve in Chianti.

The tremors were sufficiently powerful to result in homes, schools and offices being evacuated but no serious damage or injuries were reported.

The National Institute for Geophysics and Vulcanology (INGV) said there had been more than 30 tremors over 24 hours with the strongest, measuring 3.8 and 4.1, registered mid-morning on Friday.

The epicentre of the strongest quake was nine kilometres (six miles) below ground close to Greve in Chianti, one of the best known wine villages in an area of rolling hills around and between the historic cities of Florence and Siena.

The area lies in the foothills of the central section of the Apennine mountains, which run like a spine down the centre of Italy and are subject to significant seismic activity.

Mystery drone spotted flying over Belgium's nuclear plant

A mystery drone was spotted flying over a Belgium nuclear facility on Saturday, local authorities said, a day after one of the plant's reactors came back on line after a four-month closure caused by sabotage.

The mystery appearance by an unmanned aircraft, on which Belgian authorities refused to provide much detail, resembles a spate of similar drone sightings over nuclear plants in neighbouring France this autumn.

Around 20 unidentified drones have been spotted over nuclear plants since October throughout France.

"We can confirm that the East Flanders prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into a drone flight over the Doel nuclear plant," a spokesman for the investigation told Belga news agency.

"We will not provide further information for the time being," the spokesman added, hours after the plant's operator, GDF-Suez unit Electrabel, first disclosed the incident, which took place early Saturday.

The imposing Doel nuclear site sits on a riverbank near the North Sea about 25 kilometres (15 miles) north of Antwerp. It holds four of Belgium's seven reactors.

One of those reactors, Doel 4, was shut urgently in August after a leak, caused by tampering, gushed out 65,000 litres of oil lubricant.

A steam turbine weighing 1,700 tonnes was severely damaged by the loss of lubricant, requiring a 30-million-euro ($37-million) repair job that was carried out in Germany.

Belgian prosecutors have refused to confirm the sabotage as an act of terrorism, without excluding it either.

Two other Belgian reactors still remain shut, both due to cracks in their reactor containment vessels.

To face a potential shortfall in power, Belgium's government on Thursday said plans to close the Doel site's two oldest reactors, both nearly four decades old, would be suspended.

The Doel 1 and 2 reactors were due to be the first to be shut as part of Belgium's planned phase out of nuclear power by 2025, but the government said it would seek to keep them operating.

Nuclear plants account for 55 percent of Belgium's power generation, and the loss of over half of the country's nuclear power has caused concerns of a shortage or even a blackout.

Regulators have put in place special measures to help meet Belgium's needs this winter.

IDF is itching for another round of slaughter and strikes Gaza in retaliation to rocket fire

An Israeli air force F-15 fighter jet

The Israeli Defense Forces have launched an attack on Gaza allegedly striking a weapons cache near Khan Yunis in retaliation to a rocket fired from Gaza earlier in the day.

There were at least two strikes by the Israeli Air Force, reports. Residents reported hearing two explosions in an "area that contains training sites for Palestinian militants," according to AP. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

The attack allegedly comes in retaliation to a rocket fired from Gaza earlier in the day into an open territory near the Eshkol Regional Council.

"The IDF will not permit any attempt to undermine the security and jeopardize the well being of the civilians of Israel. The Hamas terrorist organization is responsible and accountable for today's attack against Israel," said the IDF Spokesman, Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, cited by .

The strike on what the military called a "Hamas terror infrastructure site" is believed to be the first airstrike by the IDF since Israel's 50-day war with Gaza this summer. Friday's rocket was the third projectile that hit Israeli territory since in which more than 2,100 Palestinianswere killed, most of them civilians.

"After Protective Edge, the state had a unique opportunity to bring about a long-term settlement," the head of Eshkol Regional Council Haim Yellin told Haaretz. "But instead we find ourselves with a ticking clock until the next round of escalation, and the next war."

Nobody has claimed responsibility so far for the rocket attack, but the former deputy defense minister Danny Danon rushed to announce that the incident once again proves that Hamas, ruling Gaza, is a terrorist organization. "If anyone doubted this then they received the answer now with the [rocket] fire,"Danon said.

Earlier this week, the EU General Court ordered that the Palestinian group Hamas be removed from the bloc's terror blacklist - over four years after Hamas appealed its terror designation before the EU. Later on Thursday, the European Parliament adopted a resolution recognizing Palestinian statehood in"principle" with only 88 MEPs voting against it while 498 supported the symbolic move.
