Ukraine plans to ditch its reliance on Russian gas completely

Ukraine is ready to do away with supplies of Russian gas by increasing domestic oil and gas exploration and getting more from Europe, said Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk.

"We have proved that we are able to get rid of Russian gas dependence," Yatsenyuk said in an interview to the Ukrainian 1+1 channel on Sunday. He said that in 2013 Ukraine bought 95 percent of its gas from Russia. In 2014 that was reduced to just 33 percent, with the rest supplied from Europe.

"We almost passed the winter. Few had hoped that we would pass it. I said it wouldn't be warm, but we wouldn't freeze," he said. "After all, it was warm and we didn't freeze," Yatsenyuk said.

The prime minister called for increased domestic production of oil and gas and the implementation of reforms in the energy sector that will help Ukraine reduce its dependence on Russian gas.

According to the state-run gas supply and transit company Ukrtransgaz, the country imported 5.1 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas from Europe in 2014, which is 59 percent more than in 2013.

The increase was due to the new Voyany-Uzhgorod pipeline opening in September 2014, which allowed Slovakia to supply 3.6 bcm, Poland 0.9 bcm, and Hungary 0.6 billion cubic meters. In 2014 Ukraine saved about $1.5 billion by buying cheaper European hydrocarbons. Imports from Russia decreased 80 percent in 2014 falling to 14.5 billion cubic meters.

Deliveries of Russian gas to Ukraine in 2014 were suspended for almost six months. On June 16 Gazprom switched to a prepayment system with Naftogaz because of a $4.5 billion debt, and only resumed deliveries on December 9.

This was preceded by lengthy negotiations with the European Commission, which resulted in Naftogaz repaying part of the debt for earlier gas supplies and beginning prepaying for new supplies.

Yatsenyuk has admitted that Ukraine was on the brink of default if it had not been for the assistance from the IMF.

In 2014 Ukraine received $9 billion in credit and paid off $14 billion in debts. Ukraine will receive $25 billion in aid in 2015.

According to Yatsenyuk, some of these funds will be transferred to the gold reserves of the National Bank of Ukraine that will help stabilize the national currency's exchange rate.

The amount of gas stored in Ukraine has fallen by 4.5 percent since 2014 to 8.7 billion cubic meters which makes the facilities only 29 percent full. Experts predict there will be only 10 billion cubic meters in reserve by October 2015.

The EU depends on Russia for a third of its gas which is delivered via Ukraine. However, the current deals expires in March and no substantive progress has been achieved to agree a new one, as Russia hasn't had any assurance that Ukraine will be able to pay its bills and escape full-scale economic collapse.

If both countries don't agree to a new deal by October, Ukraine is likely to enter the winter with half of the reserves it normally does.

EU Commissioner for Energy Gunther Oettinger has expressed concern Ukraine could start siphoning off Russian gas destined for the EU if it finds itself short of supplies.

Record breaking winter in Boston; 16.2 inches of snow during blizzard

© CBS

Gov. Charlie Baker asked Bay Staters to stay off the roads on Sunday as another powerful winter storm pounded the region.

"Driving conditions will be very difficult and we continue to urge everyone to stay off the roads for the entire day," Baker said in a morning news conference.

Boston measured 16.2 inches of snow in the storm, making this winter the city's third-snowiest on record. Blizzard conditions were verified in Chatham, Plymouth, Hyannis, Martha's Vineyard and Falmouth, where visibility was one-quarter of a mile or less with 35 mph-plus winds for three hours or more.

"There's a little bit of déjà vu all over again," Baker said.

The snow was expected to stop by midday, but the central and eastern parts of the state are under a blizzard warning through Monday morning because high winds will blow snow and reduce visibility.

With the storm falling on a weekend and students set to start February vacation on Monday, no travel ban was issued.

"The most important thing people need to do today is stay safe and take care of themselves," Baker said. "Someone who gets trapped out there. . . it's just going to be a very bad day to be on the roads."

MBTA service was suspended for the entire day on Sunday, and a decision will be made in the afternoon on Monday' service. Flights are not expected to leave or arrive at Logan Airport before mid-afternoon.

Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollack said more than 3,000 pieces of equipment are treating the roads.

"We're going to need time," she said. "Just because it stops snowing in your area does not mean you should clear your car out and get out there right away."

Following the same protocol from January's blizzard, Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station was in "cold shutdown mode" Sunday morning in case of a power outage, Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Matt Beaton said.

"There is no fear of any public safety issues whatsoever," Beaton said.

The National Guard is also assisting during the blizzard, and said it has shifted its focus from snow removal to emergency response due to the intensity of the storm.

The big lie: U.S. has supplied weapons to Kiev from the start

© REUTERS/Gleb Garanich

political analyst Stephen Lendman told Sputnik in an exclusive interview that the US leader is lying, and that the US has been supplying arms to Kiev from the very start of the military operation.

The ceasefire between Kiev forces and independence supporters of Donetsk and Luhansk is generally holding, shelling in Donbas has stopped as the truce came in force on midnight, a spokesperson at the Kiev special operations headquarters said Sunday.

But a day earlier Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and US President Barack Obama, during a meeting by phone, agreed on the further coordination of efforts in the case that the ceasefire fails and the Ukrainian conflict escalates.

Stephen Lendman, a Research Associate for the Centre for Research on Globalization explained to Sputnik, in an exclusive interview on the recent developments in Ukraine, that Washington has been lying the whole time - it has been supplying weapons to Kiev from the very start of the military operation.

"Washington supplied heavy weapons since the conflict began last April and maybe before it began in preparation for what was planned. I wrote about it several times including in a new article this (Saturday) morning," he told Sputnik.

"So, key is understanding that Washington armed Kiev the whole time. Obama claiming it's under consideration is one of his many 'Big Lies'," he said.

NATO and Ukrainian aircraft have shipped in arms and munitions on a regular basis. Washington is the main culprit, he added.

'Arms Supplied by US Are for Offense, Not Defense'

Another lie, the analyst says, is about the arms being "defensive."

"Heavy weapons are supplied for offense, not defense, of course," he says. "Fighting continued after the Minsk agreement was concluded. Kiev forces kept shelling civilian areas."

"US media, of course, blame Russia and rebels. Reports and opinions in our press are scandalous. The most outrageous I recall in my lifetime. Absolutely devoid of truth. Riddled with beginning-to-end Big Lies," Lendman said.

"I expect a short-term mostly (but not entirely) quieter period beginning Sunday or Monday followed days or weeks later by Kiev initiated escalated conflict — with full US support and encouragement," he predicts.

"Hardline Kiev elements like the Right Sector's Dmitry Yarosh and likeminded extremists reject Minsk terms. They vow to keep fighting. Expect Russia and rebels to be blamed for their aggression. Expect vicious Putin bashing to continue. It's evident in US weekend reports I've seen so far," he added.

The political analyst predicts that Washington will continue supplying Kiev with heavy weapons. Hundreds of US combat troops are coming to Ukraine on the pretext of training Ukraine's military, while hundreds of US special forces are already there.

'The Big Question is Whether Obama Will Authorize Direct US Involvement in Ukraine's Conflict'

The big question is whether Obama will authorize direct US involvement in Ukraine's conflict. He's already done it in Iraq with US boots on the ground and more on the way despite vowing months earlier never to do it.

"I believe if rebels keep decisively defeating Kiev forces, which I expect, Obama will deploy US forces to Donbas — getting America directly involved in another war as opposed to the proxy one he's now waging," said Lendman.

An escalation will bring the war to Russia's borders, and the risk is it may spill over. With US combat forces in Ukraine and Obama determined to crush pro-independence fighters, the danger of East-West confrontation is huge.

'Donbas is Obama's War. He Didn't Launch it to Quit'

"We could find ourselves in WW III whether or not anyone wants it. Global wars begin like what's now ongoing. With neocon lunatics making policy in Washington, anything ahead is possible," he added.

"I strongly believe chances for a durable, sustainable peace in Donbas are virtually nil despite, Putin's best efforts to resolve things diplomatically."

President Putin, Sergei Lavrov, and other Russian officials have gone all-out for peace throughout months of conflict.

"Obama wants war, not peace. Donbas is his war. He didn't launch it to quit. CIA, FBI and US special forces infest Kiev. They're involved in planning, implementing and directing the fighting," said the analyst.

Another push of arctic air to freeze Midwest, Northeast U.S. this week

Old Man Winter will be unrelenting across the Northeast and Midwest this week as yet another blast of arctic air dives into the regions.

This next push of arctic air is expected to bring air that is just as cold, or even colder than the air that brought subzero lows to the Midwest and Northeast during the weekend.

Millions will shiver from Chicago to New York City as record lows are challenged during this bitter blast. Records may also fall across parts of the Southeast where temperatures manage to fall into the teens and single digits.

Floridians will even experience a taste of the arctic chill with temperatures dipping down to the lower 30s in cities such as Orlando.

The worst of the cold is expected to focus on the Midwest on Wednesday before shifting east over the Northeast for Thursday.

AccuWeather.com RealFeel® temperatures below 0 F will be common across the regions during the daytime hours, including cities along the Interstate 95 corridor. These values can then drop by as much as 20 degrees during the overnight hours, making for a bitterly cold morning commute.

It is possible for some snow showers or flurries to accompany the arrival of the harsh cold, especially across the Tennessee and Ohio valleys. This could drop a few inches of snow, leading to some slick travels.

Snow showers are also likely to develop downwind of the Great Lakes late in the week even though the lakes are quickly becoming covered in ice.

Temperatures can be very dangerous, and possibly even life threatening during this arctic outbreak.

Anyone planning on venturing outside should wear extra layers, hats and gloves to help stay protected from the cold. Fortunately, winds should not be as strong as they were during the cold spell over the weekend, making it feel not quite as cold.

Water main breaks may occur across the Midwest and Northeast as the extreme cold penetrates deep into the ground. This could quickly lead to icy areas where the lines rupture.

Anyone who has animals that live in the outdoors should also take the proper precautions to keep their pets stay safe.

Pet owners should bring their animals indoors and make sure that they have proper bedding when temperatures dip below the 20-degree mark, as well as ensuring that they have water that is not frozen.

The core of the cold weather is expected to shift away from the Northeast and Midwest heading into the region, allowing temperatures to moderate.

Despite the rise in temperatures, highs are still forecast to remain below normal through at least Sunday, and possibly longer.

Pop culture's glorification and acceptance of pornography reveals society's moral bankruptcy

© YouTube

A scene from

Fifty Shades of Grey," the book and the movie, is a celebration of the sadism that dominates nearly every aspect of American culture and lies at the core of pornography and global capitalism. It glorifies our dehumanization of women. It champions a world devoid of compassion, empathy and love. It eroticizes hypermasculine power that carries out the abuse, degradation, humiliation and torture of women whose personalities have been removed, whose only desire is to debase themselves in the service of male lust. The film, like "American Sniper," unquestioningly accepts a predatory world where the weak and the vulnerable are objects to exploit while the powerful are narcissistic and violent demigods. It blesses this capitalist hell as natural and good.

"Pornography," Robert Jensen writes, "is what the end of the world looks like."

We are blinded by self-destructive fantasy. An array of amusements and spectacles, including TV "reality" shows, huge sporting events, social media, porn (which earns at least twice what Hollywood movies generate), alluring luxury products, drugs, alcohol and magic Jesus, offers enticing exit doors from reality. We yearn to be rich, powerful and celebrities. And those we must trample to build our pathetic little empires are seen as deserving their fate. That nearly all of us will never attain these ambitions is emblematic of our collective self-delusion and the effectiveness of a culture awash in manipulation and lies.

Porn seeks to eroticize this sadism. In porn women are paid to repeat the mantra "I am a c***. I am a b****. I am a w****. I am a s***. F*** me h*** with your b** c***." They plead to be physically abused. Porn caters to degrading racist stereotypes. Black men are sexually potent beasts stalking white women. Black women have a raw, primitive lust. Latin women are sultry and hotblooded. Asian women are meek, sexually submissive geishas. In porn, human imperfections do not exist. The oversized silicone breasts, the pouting, gel-inflated lips, the bodies sculpted by plastic surgeons, the drug-induced erections that never subside and the shaved pubic regions—which cater to porn's pedophilia—turn performers into pieces of plastic. Smell, sweat, breath, heartbeats and touch are erased along with tenderness. Women in porn are packaged commodities. They are pleasure dolls and sexual puppets. They are stripped of true emotions. Porn is not about sex, if one defines sex as a mutual act between two partners, but about masturbation, a solitary auto-arousal devoid of intimacy and love. The cult of the self—that is the essence of porn—lies at the core of corporate culture. Porn, like global capitalism, is where human beings are sent to die.

There are few people on the left who grasp the immense danger of allowing pornography to replace intimacy, sex and love. Much of the left believes that pornography is about free speech, as if it is unacceptable to financially exploit and physically abuse a woman in a sweatshop in China but acceptable to do so on the set of a porn film, as if torture is wrong in Abu Ghraib, where prisoners were sexually humiliated and abused as if they were on a porn set, but permissible on commercial porn sites.

A new wave of feminists, who have betrayed the iconic work of radicals such as Andrea Dworkin, defends porn as a form of sexual liberation and self-empowerment. These "feminists," grounded in Michel Foucault and Judith Butler, are stunted products of neoliberalism and postmodernism. Feminism, for them, is no longer about the liberation of women who are oppressed; it is defined by a handful of women who are successful, powerful and wealthy—or, as in the case of "Fifty Shades of Grey," able to snag a rich and powerful man. A woman wrote the "Fifty Shades" book, as well as the screenplay. A woman directed the film. A woman studio head bought the movie. This collusion by women is part of the internalization of oppression and sexual violence that have their roots in porn. Dworkin understood. She wrote that "the new pornography is a vast graveyard where the Left has gone to die. The Left cannot have its whores and its politics too."

I met Gail Dines, one of the most important radicals in the country, in a small cafe in Boston on Tuesday. She is the author of and a professor of sociology and women's studies at Wheelock College. Dines, along with a handful of others including Jensen, fearlessly decry a culture that is as depraved as Caligula's Rome.

"The porn industry has hijacked the sexuality of an entire culture and is laying waste to a whole generation of boys," she warned. "And when you lay waste to a generation of boys, you lay waste to a generation of girls."

"When you fight porn you fight global capitalism," she said. "The venture capitalists, the banks, the credit card companies are all in this feeding chain. This is why you never see anti-porn stories. The media is implicated. It is financially in bed with these companies. Porn is part of this. Porn tells us we have nothing left as human beings—boundaries, integrity, desire, creativity and authenticity. Women are reduced to three orifices and two hands. Porn is woven into the corporate destruction of intimacy and connectedness, and this includes connectedness to the earth. If we were a society where we were whole, connected human beings in real communities, then we would not be able to look at porn. We would not be able to watch another human being tortured."

"If you are going to give a tiny percent of the world the vast majority of the goodies, you better make sure you have a good ideological system in place that legitimizes why everyone else is suffering economically," she said. "This is what porn does. Porn tells you that material inequality between women and men is not the result of an economic system. It is biologically based. And women, being w***** and b****** and only good for sex, don't deserve full equality. Porn is the ideological mouthpiece that legitimizes our material system of inequality. Porn is to patriarchy what the media is to capitalism."

To keep the legions of easily bored male viewers aroused, porn makers produce videos that are increasingly violent and debasing. Extreme Associates, which specializes in graphic rape scenes, along with JM Productions, promotes the very real pain endured by women on its sets. JM Productions pioneered "aggressive throat f******" or "face f******" videos such as the "Gag Factor" series, in which women gag and often vomit. It ushered in "swirlies," in which the male performer dunks the woman's head into a toilet after sex and then flushes. The company promises, "Every w**** gets the swirlies treatment. F*** her, then flush her." Repeated and violent anal penetration triggers anal prolapse, a condition in which the inner walls of a woman's rectum collapse and protrude from her anus. This is called "rosebudding." Some women, penetrated repeatedly by numerous men on porn shoots, often after taking handfuls of painkillers, require anal and vaginal reconstructive surgery. Female performers may suffer from sexually transmitted diseases and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). And with porn mainstreamed—some porn video participants are treated like film celebrities by talk show hosts such as Oprah and Howard Stern—the behavior promoted by porn, including stripping, promiscuity, S&M and exhibitionism, has become chic. Porn also sets the standard for female beauty and female comportment. And this has had terrifying consequences for girls.

"Women are told in our society they have two choices," Dines said. "They are either f***able or invisible. To be f***able means to conform to the porn culture, to look hot, be submissive and do what the man wants. That's the only way you get visibility. You cannot ask adolescent girls, who are dying for visibility, to choose invisibility."

None of this, Dines pointed out, was by accident. Porn grew out of the commodity culture, the need by corporate capitalists to sell products.

"In post-Second-World-War America you have the emergence of a middle class with a disposable income," she said. "The only trouble is that this group was born to parents who had been through a depression and a war. They did not know how to spend. They only knew how to save. What [the capitalists] needed to jump-start the economy was to get people to spend money on stuff they did not need. For women they brought in the television soaps. One of the reasons the ranch house was developed was because [families] only had one television. The television was in the living room and women spent a lot of time in the kitchen. You had to devise a house where she could watch television from the kitchen. She was being taught."

"But who was teaching the men how to spend money?" she went on. "It was [Magazine]. This was the brilliance of Hugh Hefner. He understood that you don't just commodify sexuality, you sexualize commodities. The promise that held out was not the girls or the women, it was that if you buy at this level, if you consume at the level tells you to, then you will get the prize, which is the women. The step that was crucial to getting the prize was the consumption of commodities. He wrapped porn, which sexualized and commoditized women's bodies, in an upper-middle-class blanket. He gave it a veneer of respectability."

The VCR, the DVD and, later, the Internet allowed porn to be pumped into individual homes. The glossy, still images of , and became tame, even quaint. America, and much of the rest of the world, became pornified. The income of the global porn industry is estimated at $96 billion, with the United States market worth about $13 billion. There are, Dines writes, "420 million Internet porn pages, 4.2 million porn Web sites, and 68 million search engine requests for porn daily." [To see excerpts from Dines' book, click here.]

Along with the rise of pornography there has been an explosion in sex-related violence, including domestic abuse, rape and gang rape. A rape is reported every 6.2 minutes in the United States, but the estimated total, taking into account unreported assaults, is perhaps five times higher, as Rebecca Solnit points out in her book

"So many men murder their partners and former partners that we have well over a thousand homicides of that kind a year—meaning that every three years the death toll tops 9/11's casualties, though no one declares a war on this particular kind of terror," Solnit writes.

Porn, meanwhile, is ever more accessible.

"With a mobile phone you can deliver porn to men who live in highly concentrated neighborhoods in Brazil and India," Dines said. "If you have one laptop in the family, the man can't sit in the middle of the room and jerk off to it. With a phone, porn becomes portable. The average kid gets his porn through the mobile phone."

The old porn industry, which found its profits in movies, is dead. The points of production no longer generate profits. The distributors of porn make the money. And one distributor, MindGeek, a global IT company, dominates porn distribution. Free porn is used on the Internet as bait by MindGeek to lure viewers to pay-per-view porn sites. Most users are adolescent boys. It is, Dines said, "like handing out cigarettes outside of a middle school. You get them addicted."

"Around the ages of 12 to 15 you are developing your sexual template," she said. "You get [the boys] when they are beginning to construct their sexual identity. You get them for life. If you begin by jerking off to cruel, hardcore, violent porn then you are not going to want intimacy and connection. Studies are showing that boys are losing interest in sex with real women. They can't sustain erections with real women. In porn there is no making love. It is about making hate. He despises her. He is revolted and disgusted by her. If you bleed out the love you have to fill it with something to make it interesting. They fill it with violence, degradation, cruelty and hate. And that also gets boring. So you have to keep ratcheting it up. Men get off in porn from women being submissive. Who is more submissive than children? The inevitable route of all porn is child porn. And this is why organizations that fight child porn and do not fight adult porn are making a huge mistake."

The abuse inherent in pornography goes unquestioned in large part by both men and women. Look at the movie ticket sales for which opened the day before Valentine's Day and is expected to take in up to $90 million over the four-day weekend (which includes Presidents Day on Monday).

"Pornography has socialized a generation of men into watching sexual torture," Dines said. "You are not born with that capacity. You have to be trained into it. Just like you train soldiers to kill. If you are going to carry out violence against a group you have to dehumanize them. It is an old method. Jews become k****. Blacks become n******. Women become c****. And no one turns women into c**** better than porn."

Rare beaked whale found dead near Byron Bay, Australia

Rare beaked whale washes up dead

A rare whale has been found washed up on the state's far north coast.

The Gray's Beaked whale was discovered on Seven Mile Beach, south of Byron Bay.

Lawrence Orel, from the National Parks and Wildlife Service, said whales which beach themselves are usually sick.

He said scientists will be keen to examine the skeleton.

"The beaked whales are quite rare," Mr Orel said.

"They're generally found in the deep ocean, so it's quite rare for them to be seen close to shore.

"But stranded beaked whales are of considerable interest to the science community, and this is possibly a Gray's Beaked whale, which is one of the more unusual species.

"The carcass will be buried and... all the organisms that live in the sand will proceed to do their thing.

"In about 18 months to two years time you end up with a nice clean skeleton which becomes very interesting and valuable to science."

Dead sperm whale found near Glenburn, New Zealand

The 14m sperm whale carcass found on a South Wairarapa beach at Glenburn near Honeycomb Rock.

Workers from Ngati Kahungunu ki Wairarapa iwi yesterday recovered the bones and teeth of a 14m-long sperm whale found dead on a South Wairarapa coastal beach.

Iwi authority chief executive PJ Devonshire said the carcass of the whale - an adult male weighing about 48 tonnes - was discovered washed up and lying between rocks on a beach south of Glenburn near Honeycomb Rock a week ago Saturday.

A Department of Conservation ranger believed the animal had died of old age.

He said the DoC Honeycomb walkway extended along the stretch of coast where the whale was found and a group from the iwi had travelled to the location on Tuesday, securing and blessing the carcass in a ceremony during which the whale was also named Te Pani o te Moana - orphan of the ocean.

The name given to the whale also recalled the deaths over past weeks of several Maori elders including Masterton kaumatua Pani Himona, who died on January 25 this year, Ngati Porou leader Apirana Mahuika, who was farewelled at a tangi last week, and Kahungunu elder and Maori performing arts leader Tama Turanga Huata, who died on Wednesday.

"Tradition says we should name the whale. The name Pani describes an orphan and is also a word used for how you feel when you lose someone," he said.

"We have lost two senior elders nationally and Uncle Pani Himona here at home, and to have the whale come to us this way as well, the name is a connection for us all. It is symbolic of the passing of our elders."

Genburn Station owners John and Helen McFadzean had been alerted to the whale after fielding a call from a 77-year-old station guest who discovered the carcass a week ago Saturday while cycling a coastal route to nearby Pahau, Mrs McFadzean said.

The carcass was seen floating in waters off the coast a day earlier, she said, and the naming and blessing ceremony last week had drawn a small crowd of guests captivated by the spectacle.

Mr Devonshire said the recovery of taonga, or treasure, from the carcass of the whale included waiata and karakia - songs and prayer - and will precede meetings about the distribution and cultural uses of the "resources" across marae throughout the region.

"We will take the ribs and the jaw and try to process and utilise as much of the whale as we can. We will take as much as we can to use as resources among our people. Sperm whale teeth carry much prestige and the bones can be used for carving taonga that can be shared across the marae of the Wairarapa.

"We want to use this as a real learning opportunity for our people. It will be about learning how to process and work with the whale, and what cultural obligations do we have to the whale. That's from the first karakia and naming it to when we start to carve the bones, and remembering the stories of the whale from the past that remain with us."
