Fox News: Latest ISIS video "faked"

isis giants

Breaking news! ISIS recruits army of giants!

Video of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians being marched along a Libyan beach before being beheaded by black-clad members of ISIS is hard for any civilized person to watch, but experts who made it through the sickening, five-minute clip told FoxNews.com Friday they came to the same conclusion: The footage was faked.

No one holds out hope the victims, mostly poor fishermen who had gone to Libya to scratch out a living, are still alive. But several anomalies in the video, which was posted online Feb. 15, indicated to trained eyes that at least some of the production was done on "green screen" with background added later, perhaps to disguise the real location of the atrocity. A day after the clip went viral, Egyptian warplanes struck hard at an eastern port city near Tripoli, where the video appeared to have been shot.

Experts who examined the sickening footage of ISIS militants killing Christians in Libya say the tape was doctored with. In the above still, the killers appear to be more than 7 feet tall.

[embedded content]

"The Islamic State's manipulation of their high-production videos has become commonplace," said Veryan Khan, editorial director of the Florida-based Terrorism Research & Analysis Consortium. The murders likely took place in a studio, and the background image shown was likely from another location, the Bay in Sirte, a part of the Mediterranean Sea on the northern coast of Libya, according to Khan. There are several technical mistakes in the video that show it was manipulated, she said.

The most obvious, Khan said, is the speaker, "Jihad Joseph" is much larger than the sea in both the close up and wide shots, and his head is bizarrely out of proportion, meaning he was filmed indoors and the sea added behind him, Khan said. In addition, the jihadists featured in the film look to be more than 7 feet tall, towering as much as two feet above their victims.

The perspective is something several Saudi Arabians noted in their tweets about the video, questioning whether the jihadists were a part of some sort of special forces unit since they were so large.

Hollywood horror film director Mary Lambert, who among her many film credits directed , analyzed the film for FoxNews.com and quickly concluded Khan was correct.

Turning the sea red is a grisly effect, but one which would actually take much more than the blood of 21 men, according to experts.

"The shot that seems really tampered with is the one with the really tall Jihadists and the dwarf Christians," said Lambert, also a professor at New York University's vaunted film school. "The close-ups of Jihadists on the beach are most likely green screen."

Other technical giveaways: The sound of the ocean is likely a well-known audio track. Even more bizarre, the stream of blood in the ocean at the end of the video, and during the beheading of the final victim, is most likely not real. TRAC's forensic analyst said turning the sea red is the "cheapest and easiest post-production tool" and "can even be achieved with a cell phone." But doing it in the manner portrayed in the video is actually impossible, Khan said.

The sea turning red is obviously "FX", Lambert agreed, with special computer effects used.

"I think that in the opening shot all the figures might be animated. They never had more than six men on the beach," Lambert said.

The directors of the video used animation and "rotoscoping" to use the six figures like a rubber stamp in the marching sequence and also in the kneeling sequence, Lambert said.

Rotoscoping is a visual effect where the image is manually removed from a background in a live action video, and then composited on a different background, usually with green screens and chroma key.

"The weird jump-cut editing in the opening is a way to conceal this," Lambert said.

There are shots that pan the prisoners on the beach and tilt down to the kneeling that look real to Lambert, although she added they "might have been enhanced in some way."

The most amateur mistake, according to Khan's forensic analyst, is getting the perspective along the shoreline all wrong.

"What is supposed to be the seashore is, in reality, a bay as determined by the tide, rocks, and wave action. Looking at the two big sets of footprints in the sand shown at a 90- degree angle, neither set of footprints can be the hostages or the hostage takers. Had this been a seaside shot, the sand would have been much softer and the victims' footprints would have sunk much deeper into the sand," the forensic analyst reports.

Another mistake was made during the beheading of the final victim, Khan said.

"Not only did it lack the correct blood pulsation for decapitation, but seems to have had the blood 'faked' with cornstarch," Khan said.

As human blood oxygenates, it darkens, Khan said, adding because this blood did not, it exposes the possibility that the beheadings were not done at the same time, despite ISIS's claims.

Why all the bizarre video manipulation?

"Islamic State has been revolutionary in using the green screen technique, most likely to limit exposure to drones [and] satellite [locating of] their operations," Khan said. "The producer probably required that only the cameraman and his assistant be present for the outdoor frames. Later, in post production, the editors dropped in the executions."

The Islamic State is notorious for its high-quality productions of horrific murders such as children learning to execute victims, suspected gays being thrown from buildings and the burning alive of Jordanian air force pilot Moath al-Kasasbeh, but this video was produced by a much less talented ISIS crew, Khan said.

FoxNews.com provided TRAC's analysis to the CIA, where a spokesperson said the matter was under review. The agency is among the intelligence bureaus already pouring over the footage to determine the identity of "Jihad Joseph," who leads the mass beheading depicted on the video and who some have speculated may be an American.

Egyptian government officials did not respond to requests for comment, but Edward Yeranian, an Egypt-based radio correspondent for Voice of America and other news agencies, said Egyptian analysts are also openly skeptical about the video's authenticity.

"Even the number of people beheaded is still in dispute," Yeranian said.

50 Shades of Greece

When it comes to the ongoing Greek question, I see a lot of people eagerly jump to conclusions, after the 'debt deal', that I don't think are justified; certainly not yet. The overall conviction in the press seems to be that Syriza has given in on just about all fronts, and Germany and Dijsselbloem are the big winners.

But since that may well be the exact position Syriza wants 'the other side' to be in, where they think they have prevailed, one will have to try and think a few steps ahead before judging the situation. There's far more grey area here than many pundits seem to assume, easily 50 shades of it.

If Greece wouldn't have given Germany the idea that it was winning, Athens would have already come very close to an exit from the eurozone. The problem with that is that it is not part of the mandate Syriza has been given by Greek voters. Who have spoken out for an end to austerity, but within the existing euro framework.

Varoufakis et al. may long have concluded that such a set-up is simply not realistic, but they would still have to work up to a situation where, at some point, they can present this to the people. And that can only be done after they can convincingly show that Germany and Holland refuse to honor the democratically decided mandate Syriza brings to the table.

They would have to make absolutely sure that the other side gets the blame for the failed negotiations. They have to do that anyway, even if a Grexit is not their preferred outcome. They need to be able to prove that they bent over backwards and Germany still wouldn't play ball.

The 4-month extension debt deal agreed on this week is still contingent on a set of measures Varoufakis is due to hand to his various European 'partners' on Monday. If the 'partners' throw out the package, or too much of it, then Tsipras can go to the Greek people and say:

"Look, they're not acting in good faith, they refuse to honor your democratic vote, and the mandate you handed us with that vote. So what are we going to do now? Do you want to stay in the eurozone and the austerity programs it forces upon you, or are we going to try to find out what would happen if we leave the euro?"

Even if Tsipras et al had been relatively sure, before the recent elections that brought them to power, what the negotiations with the 'partners' would lead to, it couldn't have those negotiations and show the results to the voters. Perhaps as early as this Monday, it may be able to. It was simply always going to be a necessary step in the process.

Over the past week, Syriza has shown its ample willingness to negotiate, to do concessions, so much so that it's being accused of betraying its voters. Also a necessary step. But if Schäuble and Dijsselbloem overplay their hand the coming week in reacting to Varoufakis' proposals for getting the 4-month extension, the trapdoor may fall shut, and Greece may start preparing to leave the euro. Either after getting the people's mandate first, or after being thrown out by Brussels and Frankfurt.

Would that be such a bad thing for Greece? Nobody really knows, even if everyone is more than ready to opinionate about it. One must not forget that things are already very bad in Greece, so threats of armageddon could easily ring hollow.

An interesting perspective comes from a Bloomberg interview with Gordon Kerr, co-founder of Cobden Partners, a firm I know Varoufakis was urged to consider as financial advisors, before Syriza chose to go with Lazard (I can't seem to embed the video, so please click the link and watch it on Bloomberg, it's only 5 minutes and worth every second):

Euro Is One of the Worst Designed Currencies

Q: Why should they bail? Why should Greece go: you know what: we're going it alone?

A: Because that's probably the best alternative for them in the medium term, if not the very short term. I suspect the reason why Greece is clearly trying to do something with the European Central Bank in the next couple days is maybe they have no contingency plan ready to go.

Q: Is Europe ready for Greece to leave? Are the contingency plans in place?

A: I don't think Europe has any contingency plans.

And a few more points from the conversation:

- Even Citibank are saying that if the ELA's (=ECB emergency loans) are not extended, Greece would be perfectly within its rights to repudiate up to €300 billion of debt.

- So the day after this happens, Greece will be €300 billion better off than it is right now.

- Bulgaria's currency collapsed in 1996; within a weekend it was restructured..

- They [Greece] don't have systemically important financial institutions dragging down their economy ...

I find it hard to believe Syriza wouldn't know at least a good chunk of what Kerr says. And that would give them a lot more room to move than is generally assumed. Thing is, they need to get that mandate from their voters.

The long and short of it is there are a lot of possibilities, lots of shades of grey area, both when it comes to what people involved are thinking and in what they are doing. It doesn't seem very wise to draw conclusions before having thought through the possibilities, like a strategist, like an army general or a chess player would.

Perhaps Syriza is just playing for time, perhaps that is their no. 1 priority, just so they create the space to come up with a contingency plan in case they leave the euro. But also perhaps they already have such a plan, and what is happening now is simply part of that plan.

And then there's the option they've already been defeated and they'll have to get ready for more humiliation next week. It's just that that would make them look very short sighted, and awfully bad strategists.

Bush family ties to terror suspects re-opened by 9/11 '28 pages'

As pressure builds to make public 28 pages of a joint congressional inquiry on 9/11 which was classified by President George W. Bush, the Bush family's well-documented relationships to Saudi and other foreign terror suspects are again coming to the fore.

North Carolina Republican Congressman Walter Jones

told the New Yorker

last September, of the what is now commonly known as the “28 Pages”:

“There’s nothing in it about national security...It’s about the Bush Administration and its relationship with the Saudis.”

Prominent in the rise of the political fortunes of both the 41st and 43rd presidents is the support of figures listed by the US government as terrorist financiers, as well as some connected to the now closed, Saudi-controlled

criminal enterprise known as BCCI

. Of special interest to independent researchers is the failure of the nation's air defenses on 9/11, and the reliance of these defenses on the company formerly known as Ptech, which was founded with

funding partly from Saudi financiers

with ties to designated terrorist organizations, which employed a mix of foreign nationals and Americans with ties to Israeli software companies with possible links to Israeli Mossad. Now renamed Go Agile, Ptech is a purveyor of software which is critical to the security of major software systems embedded throughout the FAA and the US Department of Defense. A small number of congressmen have been allowed to read the classified pages, and are pushing to have them declassified. During a press conference in March of 2014, Kentucky

Congressman Thomas Massie, Republican, said

:

“As I read it, and we all had our own experience, I had to stop every couple of pages and just sort of try to absorb and try to rearrange my understanding of history. “It challenges you to re-think everything. I think the whole country needs to go through that.”

The effort to declassify the pages is being

spearheaded by 9/11 families.

A website has been started named

28pages.org

. Two major investors in the 43rd president's early business ventures, Arbusto Energy and

Harken Energy

, were

Salem bin Laden

, Osama's older brother, and

Khalid bin Mahfouz

, a

20% stakeholder in BCCI

, who was himself accused and investigated for financing terrorism.

Mahfouz

, who died in 2009, was known as the personal banker of the Saudi royal family. In 1992 then-Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts and Senator Hank Brown, Republican of Colorado, in a widely-lauded

Senate Foreign Policy Committee investigation of BCCI

, found that BCCI's “criminality” included:

“support of terrorism, arms trafficking, and the sale of nuclear technologies; its management of prostitution; its commission and facilitation of income tax evasion, smuggling, and illegal immigration; its illicit purchases of banks and real estate; and a panoply of financial crimes limited only by the imagination of its officers and customers.”

The Committee found that BCCI had been instrumental in financing the

A.Q. Khan nuclear program

in Pakistan. BCCI was also found to have played a key role in the terrorist operations of the notorious

Abu Nidal

. The Saudi-controlled BCCI played a central role in acting as a conduit for renegade CIA operations run by Lt. Col. Oliver North and General Richard Secord, with the elder Bush overseeing the operations from his position as vice president to Ronald Reagan and as a former director of the CIA. Known as the Iran-Contra Scandal in the Eighties, the renegade operation illegally sold thousands of Stinger missiles to the new Revolutionary Government of Iran, in exchange for Iran hurting President Jimmy Carter's prospects for re-election by holding onto American hostages in the 1979 Iran Hostage Crisis.

(Senate Foreign Relations Committee Report)

The Kerry-Brown Committee also reported on international groups, in particular Israeli, assisting in gunrunning and other illegal operations in league with BCCI.

The report stated

:

"In April 1989, a network of Israeli arms traffickers, operating out of Miami, made a shipment of 500 Israeli manufactured machine guns through the Caribbean island of Antigua for the use of members of the Medellin cartel. Later, one of these weapons was used in the assassination of Colombian presidential candidate Luis Carlos Galan, and several other of the weapons were found in the possession of cartel kingpin Jose Gonzalo Rodriguez Gacha after his death in a gunfight with Colombian drug agents."

At the center of the Israeli gun-running operation which provided weapons to the Medellin cartel was Israeli national and BCCI banker

Bruce Rappaport

. In 1976, investigative journalist Joseph Trento reported, in his book

"Prelude to Terror: the Rogue CIA, The Legacy of America's Private Intelligence Network the Compromising of American Intelligence,"

that:

“With the official blessing of George H. W. Bush as the head of the CIA, [Saudi Intelligence Minister Kamal] Adham transformed a small Pakistani merchant bank, the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI), into a world-wide money-laundering machine, buying banks around the world to create the biggest clandestine money network in history.”

The elder Bush himself had an account at BCCI established while director of the CIA, discovered when French customs raids the Paris BCCI branch. Trento writes that BCCI tapped into:

“the CIA’s stockpile of misfits and malcontents to help man a 1,500-strong group of assassins and enforcers.”

In 1987 a BCCI-connected bank, Intermaritime Bank of Geneva and New York, rescued Bush the Younger's Harken Energy

with a $25 million loan

, at a time that the company's fortunes were in serious decline. Trento says that the rise of BCCI, in the Seventies followed the establishment of the

Safari Club

, a secret cabal of intelligence agencies which decided it needed a network of banks to finance activities which were to be kept off the books, i.e., illegal and away from congressional oversight. The Bush family's business dealings and social connections with prominent Saudi families, including the Royal House and all recent heads of Saudi intelligence, are legendary. In 2006 the

Huffington Post noted

:

“While Cindy Sheehan was being dragged from the House gallery moments before President Bush delivered his State of the Union address for wearing a t-shirt honoring her son and the other 2,244 US soldiers killed in Iraq, [Saudi intelligence chief Prince] Turki al-Faisal was settling into his seat inside the gallery. Faisal, a Saudi, is a man who has met Osama bin Laden and his lieutenants on at least five occasions, describing the al Qaeda leader as "quite a pleasant man." He met multiple times with Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar. Yet, unlike Sheehan, al-Faisal was a welcomed guest of President Bush on Tuesday night.”

Craig Unger detailed the myriad connections between the Bushes and the Saudi government in the book

"House of Saud, House of Bush."

Former Saudi Intelligence Chief Prince Turki al-Faisal and George W. Bush.

Saudi Prince Turki al-Faisal, the head of Saudi Intelligence from 1977 to 2001, was a defendant in

a lawsuit by 9/11 families

who charge that he financed terrorism, when he met with Mullah Omar in 1998. Shortly after the meetings, the Saudis reportedly shipped the Taliban 400 new pickup trucks. According to the

London Observer

, al-Faisal "arranged for donations to be made directly to al-Qaeda and bin Laden by a group of wealthy Saudi businessmen.” Khalid bin Mahfouz, the Saudi banker and investor in the younger Bush's Harken Energy, is founder the Muwaffaq (“blessed relief”) Foundation, which has been listed by the

US Department of Treasury as an Al Qaeda front

. The charity is run by

Yasin al-Qadi

, who, although he has had his terrorist designation overturned in several international jurisdictions, remains a "Specially Designated Global Terrorist" under U.S. law. The George W. Bush administration has been accused, by

government whistleblowers

, of strenuously blocking investigations of attacks on American citizens and interests which trace to shadowy figures among America's allies. In 2000, Bush administration

Ambassador Barbara Bodine blocks

an investigation into the bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen by

maverick FBI investigator John O'Neill

, and eventually prohibited his return to Yemen. O'Neill said that the main terrorist threat now comes

from transnational groups

not officially backed by national governments. O'Neill died in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, after reporting for his first day on a new job after he resigned in frustration from the FBI.

Bush Administrations Shuts Down Ptech Investigation

Soon after 9/11, a

top systems analyst at JP Morgan

discovered, by accident, that the nation's defenses and law enforcement computer systems had a critical component which was in the hands of a foreign company. Worse, employees and principles of that company, Ptech, had documented and extensive ties to terrorist financing. Ptech was the subject of a report by Boston's

WBZ News reporter Joe Bergentino

. Ptech, now renamed Go Agile, is embedded in such diverse government agencies as the U.S. Army, the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Naval Air Command, Congress, the Department of Energy, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Internal Revenue Service, NATO, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Secret Service and the White House. In a spectacular coincidence, one of Ptech's prime benefactors was

Yasin al-Qadi

, the Treasury Department's "Specially Designated Global Terrorist," and founder the Muwaffaq (“blessed relief”) Foundation. Although President George W. Bush signed an executive order freezing Yassin Al-Qadi's for links to terrorism, the government failed to investigate Ptech when Bergantino brought his information to the authorities, in October of 2001. When it did investigate in August 2002, it was

charged only with small loan fraud

, and subjected to a small fine. As Go Agile, Ptech remains, to this day, in charge of a government-embedded software which is said to provide a “God-eye view of the battlefield,” in one deployment, and which provides access to every aspect of every other software system the government uses. Critics of the US military's response to the attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, on September 11, 2001, are particularly harsh on the failure of nation's air defenses to stop any one of the planes which hit their targets. The first report of a hijacked plane came into the FAA at 8:19 a.m. This was a full hour and twenty minutes before the last plane struck the Pentagon at 9:38.

Interceptor pilots

and

air traffic controllers

say that fighters are typically in the air within 10 minutes of any commercial aircraft going off course or becoming unresponsive to radio communication. But the morning of 9/11 was anything but typical, as

communications breakdowns

and simultaneous war games planned for that morning

interfered with the military response

, according to the 9/11 Commission.

vault.fbi.gov

Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, after 9/11, said that the nation's air defenses were "turned outward" toward an overseas threat, and therefore easily taken by surprise from within. But this has turned out to be incorrect, as

it is now confirmed

that all three flights had been reported as hijacked within minutes of going off-course, but were not intercepted despite fighter jets sitting ready to scramble, within minutes of the planes' locations in the air. The communications, information, and control systems of the entire US military are overseen, and can be intervened in, by the overarching "enterprise-wide" system of Ptech.

Ptech's detractors

say that Ptech's software was perfectly positioned to give malicious interlopers the power to interfere with, and confuse, the nation's air defenses on 9/11. The 9/11 Commission has already said that

FAA and NORAD officials "lied"

in order to shift blame in the enormously botched response in the air to 9/11. The FAA and NORAD have given

confusing and conflicting testimonies

to the 9/11 Commission on the morning's events and timeline. General Ralph Eberhart,

commander of NORAD, said

: "Regrettably the tragic events of 9/11 were never anticipated or exercised." But in 2002 it was revealed that the military

had already scheduled exercises

involving domestic aircraft crashing into important US buildings.

Ptech Pedigree Runs back to BCCI, Bush-Saudi Connection

Shockingly to WBZ reporter Bergantino, as well as to the security software expert who tipped him off to Ptech's terrorist connections, the FBI under the Bush administration did not follow up on investigating the connections despite already having seized the assets of Yassin al-Qadi. The charge of aggressively blocking investigation into certain terror subjects has not been made only against the Bush Jr. administration. A few years earlier,

FBI agent Robert Wright

had protested that the Clinton Justice Department was blocking him from “following the money trail” behind Saudi national Osama bin Laden, in the words of an ABC News report, after the 1998 bombings of two American embassies in Africa. Chicago federal prosecutor Mark Flessner, a Wright ally who was assigned to the case,

told ABC News

:

"There were powers bigger than I was in the Justice Department and within the FBI that simply were not going to let it [the building of a criminal case] happen. And it didn't happen."

A prime suspect in Wright's investigations was Yassin al-Qadi, the Ptech investor who is also the son-in-law of Sheikh Ahmed Salah Jamjoom, a former Saudi Arabian government minister with close ties to the Saudi royal family. Other possible foreign agents who were involved with Ptech are Israelis who have since gone to work for the Israeli software company

Guardium

, a spin-off of Log-On Software, which, having critical national security functions and principles who are

former Israeli military officers

, is likely tied to the Israeli Mossad secret service organization. Critics of Ptech/Go Alige's presence inside the American military command and control structure note that such sensitive positions elsewhere in the government can be denied to people with mere marijuana convictions, nevermind ones with documented terrorist links or links to foreign intelligence organizations. In 1991, an American journalist was probing deeply into a stateless, shadowy, international criminal cartel with BCCI at its center. In the words of

the Baltimore Sun

:

"a shady set of connections...that appeared to link a series of scandals from the Reagan and Bush administrations involving Middle East arms deals, drug dealing and political corruption."

Later that year the journalist,

Danny Casolaro

, was found dead in what was ruled as a suicide by the authorities, though his family has never accepted that ruling. Casolaro named the entity he was uncovering

"The Octopus."

Casolaro's funeral was marked by a strange occurrence, when a man a US Army uniform, who was highly decorated and accompanied by an aid and driven in a limousine, walked up to Casolaro's casket after the family had left, laid a medal on it, and saluted. Casolaro had never officially served in the military.

CT scan reveals 1,000 year old mummy inside statue of Buddha

© Screenshot from youtube.com video

Dutch scientists have scanned a statue of Buddha, dating back to the 11th or 12th century, to reveal a mummy inside. They've also taken samples of the mummy's insides and discovered scraps of paper with ancient Chinese characters on them.

A human skeleton glows through the statue's silhouette on the computed tomography scan, done in the Meander Medical Center in Amersfoort, the Netherlands.

Gastrointestinal and liver doctor Reinoud Vermeijden and radiologist Ben Heggelman examined their "oldest patient ever" in their free time, the center's website says.

The mummy is identified as the mummified body of the Buddhist master Liuquan. It's described as being one of a kind and consequently the only one available for research in the West.

The doctors performed endoscopy on the mummy and say their discovery is unique.

They found scraps of paper with ancient Chinese characters among rotted material in places where organs used to be.

Bone material from the mummy has been taken for DNA testing. The results will be revealed in a monograph on Master Liuquan, to be published later.

The statue containing the mummy was taken for medical tests, from the Drent Museum in Assen, where it had been on display. It has since been brought to the National Museum of Natural History in Budapest, where it will stay till May 2015.

Ice age cometh: Brutal Winters Point to Planet Turning Colder

While the direction of climate change cannot be determined based on a single event, the collection of record-breaking winters shows that the planet is getting colder, climate expert John Casey tells Newsmax TV .

"Just about every American can now see that we've had a series of brutal, record-setting winters that are starting earlier, staying longer and breaking records that are 100 and 150 years old," Casey told J.D. Hayworth, who was joined by Republican strategist Ford O'Connell, on "America's Forum" Wednesday.

"Clearly, the planet is getting colder," said Casey, president of the Space and Science Research Corp.

Watch video here:

"The warming community has utterly failed in its climate models and predictions about the climate," he said. "We are facing some stark realities right now that say without doubt that we are heading into a new cold era."

Casey, who worked as a consultant for NASA and was a White House space program adviser, is the author of "," in which he argues that the planet is currently undergoing a cooling trend.

"If we look at the facts based on the five major global temperature data sets that our company tracks and evaluates on a regular basis, we see that the story of 2014 being the warmest year on record was in fact just a story," he said.

"According to our analysis, using the best science and technical data available, 2014 was a warm year, an important year, but merely another warm year in a strain of years that have been essentially stable for the last 18 years — where there has been no effective growth in global warming," he said.

"That's a stark change from what we've been told."

Casey continued:

"The reality is, there's been no growth, no global warming for 18 years. On the contrary, our analysis shows the trend lines are definitely heading south and the planet is definitely getting colder."

While the Northeast has been hit with a record amount of snow this winter, Casey said that that fact alone is not enough to make a case for global cooling.

"The reality is, this isn't a single event and this isn't a single winter," he said.

"We've had many winters now that are record-setting winters — none of which, by the way, are supposed to be happening at all," he added.

"We've been told by UN scientists that we're actually not even supposed to be having any snow, much less seven feet of snow in Buffalo, and a record three feet or more snow in Boston."

Rather, "we must accept ... that the sun is really the most powerful force in the solar system, not humans on planet Earth.

"The sun is going into a deep hibernation for the next 30 years," he said. "There's nothing we can do about it. We need to learn about it, and we need to adapt."

Foiled coup in Venezuela timed with Opposition leaders' call for regime change

A 'Super Tucano': Was the US plotting 'tactical strikes' in order to destroy the Venezuelan govt?

New revelations in Venezuela have linked U.S. private security firm Blackwater, now known as Academi, to the aircraft that was to be used as part of Thursday's thwarted "Blue Coup" attempt.

The four-stage plan included economic war, an international media offensive against the Venezuelan government, political destabilization fomenting ungovernability, and finally the use of a Super Tucano aircraft to strike "tactical targets" in the capital, such as the Presidential Palace, teleSur, and military intelligence.

The coup was planned for the one-year anniversary of violent opposition protests known as the Guarimba and was to come one day after a public statement by leading opposition leaders calling for a "transition".

According to U.S. aviation records, the EMB-314B1 or "Super Tucano" aircraft in question was acquired from Brazilian manufacturer Embraer by the firm Blackwater Worldwide in 2008 allegedly for the purpose of pilot training. Registered under the serial number N314TG, the aircraft is, moreover, the only one of its kind sold by the Brazilian firm to a private company.

The Super Tucano is a light, highly agile Brazilian aircraft designed principally for pilot training and counterinsurgency operations. The aircraft has an operational range that extends from the U.S. to any point in Colombia, and has been widely used in Colombian counterinsurgency operations, including in the 2008 assassination of FARC second-in-command Raul Reyes, in violation of Ecuadorian sovereignty.

While Venezuela does have its own fleet of 12 Super Tucanos, all aircraft are currently grounded and undergoing major repairs, stated President Nicolas Maduro, whilst offering further evidence regarding the foreign origin of the aircraft.

Blackwater has a checkered human rights record. Several of its contractors have been indicted in U.S. courts for their role in the 2007 massacre of Iraqi civilians, and Jeremy Scahill, national security correspondent for the , has documented the firm's role in the CIA's global assassination program.

National Assembly President Accuses Canadian and UK Officials of Involvement

On Friday, National Assembly President, Diosdado Cabello, alleged that officials at the Canadian and British embassies had links to the failed coup attempt, in a new round of revelations surrounding the attempted putsch.

Cabello claimed that a Canadian official by the name of Nancy Birbek was investigating the contingency plans of the Arturo Michelena airport in Valencia.

"On Monday, together with another Canadian embassy official, this woman identified as Nancy Birbeck, was inquiring about the capacities of that same [airport] for special cases. Is this woman asking about the capacities of the airport for cases of contingency?"

The National Assembly President went on to indicate that he also had evidence that an official from the British embassy as well as a staff member of the U.S. embassy charged with overseeing visas had links to the thwarted coup plot.

For his part, President Nicolas Maduro has alleged that the U.S. government is behind the coup, accusing U.S. embassy personnel of attempting to "bribe" Venezuelan armed forces officials. The Venezuelan head of state also claimed that one unnamed U.S. official was responsible for authoring the "script" that was to be publicly broadcast by military officials on the day of the coup claiming that the armed forces had risen up against the government.

International Outcry

In the wake of Thursday's foiled coup plot, the Bolivarian government of Nicolas Maduro has received a raft of messages of support from regional leaders and civil society organizations alike.

On Saturday, the Latin American Parliament, a regional consultative assembly representing the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, issued a statement condemning the thwarted coup attempt. President of the regional body, Angel Rodriguez, called for a comprehensive investigation by Venezuelan prosecutors and advised Venezuelan citizens to remain "alert" in the face of destabilization efforts by "extremist groups" which he indicated were backed by the United States.

Moreover, the Secretary General of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) Ernesto Samper also rejected the coup attempt and expressed support for President Nicolas via his twitter account.

"UNASUR reiterates its will to find democratic and pacific routes and reiterates its support for President Nicolas Maduro."

The presidents of Bolivia and Nicaragua also joined the chorus voicing solidarity with the government of Nicolas Maduro.

"We all have the obligation to enforce respect of democracy and elections, and if we all have a clear conscience, not even the empire can defeat us," declared Evo Morales

For his part, Daniel Ortega denounced the "criminal and futile attempts of the Empire to undermine the Bolivarian Revolution."

From Mexico City, the Network of Intellectuals, Artists and Social Movements in Defense of Humanity has also issued a statement announcing support for the Venezuelan government and condemning the coup efforts by opposition leaders.

Most recently, the Presidents of the Uruguayan Senate and House of Deputies spoke out on Monday against the thwarted coup and proclaimed their backing of the Bolivarian government of Nicolas Maduro. Brazil's Landless Movement has also thrown its support behind the Venezuelan government.

Thousands of crabs wash up on Balboa Island, California

Tiny red crabs washed up in Balboa Island in Newport Beach on Saturday, some dead, some alive.

Daniel Stringer had an idea after eying the little lobster-like crustaceans that washed ashore on Balboa Island.

"I'll get the barbeque," said Stringer, who has lived on Balboa Island for 47 years and has never seen the small crabs like the ones that showed up Saturday. "I like mine with butter."

Thousands of mini crabs - which actually look like tiny lobsters or craw fish - created a rim of red along the shoreline, scattered on the sand along the sleepy seaside of Balboa Island in Newport Beach. Most washed up dead at high tide, but some were still alive and swimming near the shoreline.

Passerby stopped to marvel at the unusual sight, some people coming to the aid of the ones that still looked like they had some life to them.

The Pleuroncodes planipes, also known as pelagic red crabs or tuna crabs, showed up during the last king tide event - when tides are especially high - at the end of January.

But then, as quick as they showed up, they disappeared - until Saturday morning, when they came in by the thousands. Another king tide event, which only happens a few times each year, showed up again this week, though its unclear whether the two incidents are related.

Experts say the crabs - which are about 1-to 3-inches long - haven't been seen in the area for decades, and said it's the warm water that has been lingering near 60-degrees that brought them here. They normally life in Baja California, according to archives.

Balboa Island resident Brian Cummings and son Chandler, 9, spent the morning picking them up, one by one, and tossing them back to the sea.

"We try to throw back as many lives ones as we can ... We try and look for the bright red ones to throw them back in the water," Brian Cummings said, picking one up and tossing it into the water, where it simply floated upside down.

When asked if he wanted to eat them up, Chandler looked skeptical.

"They probably don't have any meat on them," he said.

Visitor James Gutierrez, of Pomona, was fascinated by the sight.

"You don't realize how much sea life is out there until you see something like this," he said.

Aaron Roth, 3, had just one word to describe the sight: "Cooool."

Resident Michael Brennan knew all about the crabs, doing as much research as possible after the last ones washed ashore about a month ago.

"They swim backwards," he said to a group gathering near the shore.

The pelagic crabs are the latest in a year of odd sightings along the coast caused by unusual warm water experts say are signs of El Nino. A variety of whales like orcas, sperm and humpback have shown up in high numbers, along with odd sightings like hammerhead sharks and whale sharks in the area.

Other sightings like a glow-in-the-dark organisms called pyrosomes washed ashore in September, and before that a blue, jellyfish-like creatures known as "By-the-wind sailors," invaded the coastline.

A wahoo - normally found in Mexico - was reeled in by fisherman in August, and anglers are still catching yellowtail of the coast, which are usually scarce during this time of year.
