Gut flora helps the body produce vitamin C

Image

We live in a time and age where decades old assumptions about the human body are being overturned on a surprisingly regular basis. For instance, bodily cells were recently found to communicate inheritable information to sex cells (e.g. sperm) capable of being passed down to the next generation, effectively challenging the exclusivity of Darwinian forms of inheritance in favor of including the long denied Larmarckian view. Last year, edible plant material was found to 'talk' to the cells in our body via nanoparticles known as exosomes that regulate the expression of our DNA, as well as other important physiological pathways. This month, we reported on research showing that mammalian cells are capable of extracting energy directly through the sun with the help of the 'plant blood' molecule chlorophyll. Even more amazing may be Gerald Pollack's notion that water's hypothesized fourth phase acts like a battery within the body, providing a continuous source of sunlight-driven energy that requires no intermediary to convert directly to biochemical energy through the charge separation it affects in water.

These are only small sampling of new, scientifically confirmed discoveries that fly in the face of conventional scientific wisdom, opening up possibilities in nutrition and medicine that may contribute to radically safer and more effective therapeutic interventions in the near future.

'Germs' makes us supra-human?

Recently, I had a rather stimulating email exchange with my colleague Stephanie Seneff, PhD, who pointed out a study she had found wherein it was discovered that the human microbiome is capable of producing vitamin C. This is a remarkable possibility, as the human body is not believed capable of producing this essential vitamin, long since our hominid ancestors lost the genetic ability to do so about 60 million years ago. The microbiome, however, is part of the new definition of the human body as a meta-organism, consisting of trillions of other microbial organisms and viruses without which we would never have survived. Also known as the hologenome theory of evolution, the idea is that the object of natural selection is not the individual organism, but the holobiont, i.e. the individual organism plus its associated microbial communities which include a mind numbingly complex web of bacteria, viruses, protozoa, helminths and fungi. In fact, if one looks at the genetic contribution of the human genome versus the total set of genes represented by the other organisms that make up the holobiont our genes only account for about 1%.

Not only is this a real ego challenge to anthropocentric and germophobic thinkers, but it reveals just how many capabilities we may borrow from these tiny co-inhabitants. For instance, recent research shows that our body draws from over 90 different bacterial strains in our gut to digest the gluten proteins in wheat that our own genome does not readily enable us to break down with any efficiency. Another cool example of how 'germs' help us to compensate for our genetic defects is the discovery that a certain Lactobacillus strain of food importance is capable of producing the active methylated form of folate -- 5-methylenetetrahydrofolate -- that those with MTHFR mutations are notoriously poor at producing in optimal quantities. We can assume, therefore, that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are not the final story on nutritional deficiencies or aberrations, but that our microbial friends may fill in gaps or voids that our genes are not capable satisfying.

In this sense, the microbial portion of the holobiont significantly extends our genetic and/or epigenetic capabilities, making it possible to survive the ever-shifting ecological, environmental, nutritional niches that we have traversed in our seemingly infinitely long march (biological time stretching back millions of years) to our present-day incarnation. Whereas the primary nucleotide sequences in our DNA may require tens, hundreds and even millions of years to be significantly and/or functionally altered, microbial DNA contributions may shift in years, months, weeks, minutes and perhaps even in real-time in a matter of seconds. Can you see why Nature has compelled us into collaborating and even incorporating 'germs' into our body (note: the mitochondria in our body, according to the endosymbiotic view, were once proteobacteria outside of us!).

How we produce vitamin C

And so, it was within the context of this new understanding of the human body and it's physiological capabilities that Seneff and I explored the possibility of vitamin C producing bacteria in our gut.

The paper where this idea first emerged was published in titled, "Bacteria as vitamin suppliers to their host: a gut microbiota perspective." The remarkable paper focused on the role of food-related lactic acid bacteria (as found in cultured foods such as yogurt) as well as human gut commensal such as bifidobacteria and their ability to produce the vitamins we are not able to produce ourselves. The highlight, of course, was the discovery that bacterial isolates from human gut samples were capable of producing a wide range of vitamins, including vitamin C (ascorbate):

Notably, vitamin metabolism pathways were shown to be highly represented in all enterotypes, while two enterotypes were particularly enriched in genes that specify the biosynthetic enzymes for biotin, riboflavin, pantothenate, ascorbate, thiamine and folate production. These phylogenetic and functional differences among enterotypes thus reflect different combinations of microbial trophic chains with a probable impact on synergistic interrelations with the human host." [emphasis added]

Unfortunately, the paper did not discuss the methodological details as to how exactly they uncovered this fact. And so, in an effort to validate this study I did an extensive database search until I discovered a concrete example of a bacterial strain known to inhabit the human body that is capable of producing ascorbate: Corynebacterium glucuronolyticum (ATCC 51867), which contains an L-ascorbate biosynthesis pathway depicted below.
Image

Interestingly, most Corynebacterium species are considered benign, but C. glucouronolyticum has been been linked to human urogential infections, and C. diphtheria is associated with opportunistic diphtheria infections. Emerson once said that a weed is an herb whose virtues have yet to be discovered. So too may be the case with 'germs.' A nuisance, perhaps, may grow into greater numbers when the body is suffering from a deficiency of one of its primarily biosynthetic pathways and associated biomolecule, be it a vitamin, anti-tumor agent, or antibiotic. It is possible that C. glucuronolyticum grows into 'infectitious' proportions when the body is starved in vitamin C, and that when the body is replete with vitamin C the normally benign strain does not contribute to urogenital infection.

Of course this discovery does not prove that the gut flora are capable of producing physiological relevant quantities of vitamin C via this strain alone. But it does prove that it is for the human body to produce vitamin C -- further exemplifying how little we know about the human body, and again, how vitally important the 'germs' may be in helping us to compensate for our genetic impairments. I've always struggled with the idea that our ancestors were somehow able to survive 60 million years completely dependent on dietary sources of vitamin C, when an extreme deficiency (an inevitability given the famine-fast fluctuations of hunter-gatherer modes of subsistence) could result in severe debilitation or even death. That our body may contain a means to produce vitamin C -- perhaps small but still life-saving amounts -- makes intuitive sense, given the intelligence shot through the infinite complexity of Nature. And so, perhaps we are now only beginning to understand how much more energetic and biomolecular independence we have than conventional science has claimed we have.

Symbolic? Eatonville man spots bald eagle falling from the sky in Eatonville, Washington

Fallen eagle

James Zilka and his family were headed out on a fishing trip Saturday morning when they saw a bald eagle drop from the sky, diving from a light pole to the ground below.

At first, James thought the majestic bird was dive-bombing for some prey along SR 161 near 304th Street E.

But after hitting the ground, the eagle wasn't moving — laying still in the road.

"There is a lane for the dump trucks to use to merge out of the dump. That's where it lay," James told Q13 FOX News. "We stopped just in front and I grabbed my phone and called 911."

The eagle ended up hobbling to a nearby fence because of other birds of prey in the area, he said.

"The ravens and crows ... they are natural enemies of eagles ... were circling to finish it off," said James.

Soon the Washington State Patrol and the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife arrived.

The wildlife agent asked them if they could go to a nearby store and get a large box.

Meanwhile, the agent was able to catch the bird and assess its condition. It turns out the eagle had a broken wing and was unable to fly. It also had a split beak.

Officials then took the injured bird to a rehabilitation facility where it would undergo treatment and be nursed back to health — before returning to the wild.

Hypocrite! 'US not engaged in major war': Obama Memorial Day remark slammed

US President Barack Obama bows his head after placing a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier during the Memorial Day observance at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia May 25, 2015

Barack Obama has made a speech, saying that this Memorial Day is the first in 14 years without major US war. Critics and social media users slammed him as hypocritical, saying the US remains involved in military conflicts and proxy wars.

Obama said on Memorial Day, a US holiday for remembering those who died while serving in the country's armed forces.

He added that this Memorial Day is the first but admitted that about 10,000 US troops remain on a mission to train and assist Afghan forces, even though

"And as so many families know, our troops continue to risk their lives for us," Obama said.

Obama also said that the wars which America waged were "for democracy, the peace we've laid to preserve it."

The statement by US president was met with strong criticism both from experts and social media users.

wrote Brian Fernandes, a user on Facebook.

The US still has troops in Afghanistan and plans to keep them there for years. And they have fomented wars in Ukraine, Africa, Syria, and now Yemen. The US is the most barbaric war-mongering nation on Earth," added another, Richard Tina.

The 13-year war US war in Afghanistan ended in December 2014, concluding in a cost of nearly $1 trillion and the lives of over 2,200 Americans, according to the New York Times. Despite America's combat operations being rolled back, troops remained as part of an agreement reached between Washington and Kabul.

Afghanistan still sees explosions and shootings. In January three US military contractors were killed in Afghanistan, after gunfire erupted at Kabul International Airport's military facility.

The Taliban's leadership declared that the Obama administration's decision to slow US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan would hamper peace efforts in the country.

Washington is participating pretty directly in an ongoing conflict in Iraq" in addition to a number of proxy wars that they are supporting," former US marine Ross Caputi told RT.

The war in Afghanistan

Caputi believes that the US government is attempting to present a certain picture of US foreign policy and US military engagements around the world.

Washington uses "misinformation" which is a part of "perception management," he says.

Countries once invaded or interfered with by the US and its allies - Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Yemen, Pakistan, Somalia or Syria - have become hotbeds for militants from Al-Qaeda, the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) and similar terrorist groups.

Though Washington has not officially declared war since 1941 (in WWII), Syria became the seventh country that Barack Obama - recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize - has bombed in his presidency.

Washington is also involved in on-ground training of the military in the countries, engaged in internal wars, including the one in Ukraine. In April, paratroopers of the US 173rd Airborne Brigade arrived in western Ukraine to provide training for Ukrainian government troops who fight against rebels in eastern Ukraine.

Portents and signs: Mutant pig born with strange features and appendage in China

Birth shock ... a mutant piglet was born a with a penis-like appendage on its forehead and a human-like head. Picture: Australscope

Snaps of a mutant piglet born with a human face and appendage on its head have gone viral, with speculation rife about what could have caused the abnormality.

The runt of the litter was born alive and squealing on a Chinese farm, but died after being rejected by its mother and refusing to bottle feed.

There are reports the newborn pig may have suffered from cyclopia, an extremely rare birth defect which results in just one eye where the nose should be.

It occurs when genetic problems or toxins disrupt the embryonic forebrain-dividing process.

Humans and animals born with this condition die shortly after birth.

Piglet ... a farmer says he was inundated with cash offers for a pig born with a human face.

Farmer Tao Lu said he couldn't believe his eyes when the strange-looking piglet was born on his property in Yanan township in Nanning city in southern China.

After news spread of the mutant pig, neighbours rushed to the farmer's home.

"I was one of a dozen people went there to see the piglet, and it really did human face and exactly like he said, a willie growing out of its forehead," local Wu Kung, who posted his images, said.

Farmer Tao said he was amazed because he received phone calls from collectors prepared to pay a large sum of money for the animal.

"It was a large litter, and the mutant was one of the last of 19 piglets to be born," he said.

"All the others were normal, just this one was really bizarre. It is a shame it died, I could have got more money for it them for the rest of the family put together based on what people were offering me on the phone."

He said they had wanted to put the mutant pig on display to attract visitors.

Portents and signs: Mutant pig born in Scotland

The piglet was born with a deformed face

A piglet has been born in Scotland with a 'human face' and a 'penis' on its forehead - just days after the same genetic mutation was found on a Chinese pig.

The animal who had a deformed face and snout, was born at a Scottish farm but is thought to have died at birth.

A farmer in China, was mobbed by crowds after his pig gave birth to a similar looking piglet, which was described as having a 'penis on its face'. The piglet, which later died, was said to have been part of a bizarre bidding war.

Staff at the farm, who don't want to be identified, have said that they have never seen such a serious deformity on a piglet, and although defects were not unlikely in high volumes of piglets, this is the rarest they have ever seen.

A stockman, who didn't want to be named, said: "When I went in this morning I seen it lying there and I immediately thought 'I've seen that in the paper', I wanted people to see that these things happen in Scotland too.

"It is very rare and no one here has ever seen anything like it before. The piglet was part of a litter of ten and the rest were fine, it probably died at birth and wouldn't have been able to suckle from its mother.

"I don't know if the pig in China would have been alive at all, as it wouldn't have been able to feed.

"At any one time there can be 19 litters of piglets, so you do get some with deformities, but nothing like this."

Waterspout in Florida lifts bounce house 50 ft. up into air, injuring kids inside (VIDEO)

Still from YouTube video/ALLTVCHANNEL2

A Memorial Day attraction at Fort Lauderdale Beach Park in Florida went terribly wrong when a sudden waterspout uprooted and overturned an inflatable bounce house, injuring children inside, before lifting it some 50 feet (15 meters) up in the air.

The video of the accident posted on YouTube shows the inflatable house flying above palm trees, across a parking lot and over four lanes of traffic.

The Children were ejected before the inflatable structure flew above palm trees police said.

Fort Lauderdale Police spokesman Keven Dupree said.

Still three of the children who were inside the bounce house during the early afternoon incident were injured and had to be taken to Broward Health Medical Center. All of the kids were under the age of eight, according to Greenlaw. One of them will be held overnight. The other two suffered fractures and minor injuries, but have already been released after receiving medical treatment.

A waterspout is an intense columnar vortex that occurs over a body of water and looks like a tornado. But unlike tornadoes, waterspouts don't need thunderstorms to form. At the time of the accident, a band of clouds had developed over the ocean creating winds favorable for waterspout formation.

said Jeral Estupinan, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Miami.

The bounce house had been secured to a basketball court as part of a city-sponsored family activity zone set up for the Memorial Day holiday. The waterspout snapped a concrete pole holding a basketball hoop. No vehicles or pedestrians were hit by the airborne bounce house and no other injuries were reported.

Surplus Repression and the Self-Defeating Deep State

The nation is wallowing self-piteously in a fetid trough of denial and adolescent rage/magical thinking now that the nation's bogus, debt-based "prosperity" has crashed and cannot be restored.

If you type Deep State into the custom search window in the right sidebar, the search results fill 10 pages. I think it is fair to say I have long had a deep interest in the Deep State.

The Deep State is generally assumed to be monolithic: of one mind, so to speak, unified in worldview, strategy and goals.

In my view, this is an over-simplification of a constantly shifting battleground of paradigms and power between a number of factions and alliances within the Deep State.Disagreements are not publicized, of course, but they become apparent years or decades after the conflict was resolved, usually by one faction consolidating the Deep State's group-think around their worldview and strategy.

History suggests that this low-intensity conflict within the ruling Elite is generally a healthy characteristic of leadership in good times. As times grow more troubled, however, the unity of the ruling Elite fractures into irreconcilable political disunity, which becomes a proximate cause of the dissolution of the Empire if it continues.

Many consider it "impossible" that Wall Street could possibly lose its political grip on the nation's throat, but I suggest that Wall Street has over-reached, and is now teetering at the top of the S-Curve, i.e. it has reached Peak Wall Street.

Consider what the extremes of Wall Street/Federal Reserve predation, parasitism, avarice and power have done to the nation, and then ask if other factions within the Deep State are blind to the destructive consequences.

Frequent contributor B.C. recently submitted two working papers from the Deep State network that suggested rampant financialization was harming the real economy. This is powerful evidence that the corrosive consequences of financialization on the stability of the real economy is filtering into the group-think hive of the Deep State Network:

Why does financial sector growth crowd out real economic growth? (Bank for International Settlements) After studying how financial development affects aggregate productivity growth, we concluded that the level of financial development is good only up to a point, after which it becomes a drag on growth, and that a fast-growing financial sector is detrimental to aggregate productivity growth.

Here is a sketch of The Deep State Network, which includes not only the nodes of centralized power but of the institutions that feed and support the Deep State's decisions and policies. These include Ivy League and federally funded research universities, the Mainstream Media, think-tanks, NGOs (non-governmental organizations) and the spectrum of institutions that influence the public's ability to frame and contextualize events, i.e. the institutions of propaganda.

A recent interview with Deep State scholar Peter Dale Scott made me wonder if the increasingly repressive policies of the visible state are also being recognized as destabilizing and therefore a threat to the entire American Imperial Project.

Scott's key phrase is surplus repression, which I interpret to mean repression that exceeds the practical needs of the Deep State to maintain public order.

We can anticipate the Deep State fracturing over the question of how much repression is enough: those who believe there is no upper limit on the effectiveness of repression, and those who understand that at some point, unlimited policing and financial repression will unleash a social destabilization that will threaten the integrity of the Empire and the Deep State itself.

Here is an excerpt from the interview:

Peter Phillips: We’re really happy to have you here. I’ve just finished reading your book, The American Deep State: Wall Street, Big Oil, and the Attack on U.S. DemocracyIn your new book you talk about the egalitarian mindset culture of America. We believe in the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, open government, transparency. And then you say also that there’s a dark side, or a deep side inside America that’s repressive, that is looking to be able to detain people without warrants, warrantless wire tapping and all of that – there’s a repressive side. Can you tell us a little bit more about how you frame this understanding of this culture of repression?

Peter Dale Scott: Actually, I think there’s always been a deep state in America and there have been times when it has been very repressive. We’re in a period of, you might say, surplus repression – repression that doesn’t serve anyone’s interests, not even the interests of the ruling class. (emphasis by CHS)

But it’s not in its essence repressive; it’s just repressive when it wants to be. I think a lot of the trouble we’re in now, actually is – and I say this in my book – that in the 1970s the deep state – the bankers, the lawyers, the people in foundations, all kinds of people – were really quite terrified at the forces in America calling for revolution – the African-Americans, but also, equally and perhaps ultimately even more, the anti-war movement because if you had a successful anti-war movement that would mean America would have to get out of the business of war. And that was, I think, an intolerable thought for them.

I think the Deep State was terrified of more than the anti-war movement--it was terrified of the counter-culture, which threatened the entire status quo of mindless consumerism and obedience to authority.

The Counterculture, which included the culmination of the Civil Rights Movement and the birth/expansion of the feminist movement, Eastern spirituality in the U.S., back-to-the-land self-sufficiency, rock music as a cultural force, the nonviolent anti-war movement, the anti-nuclear movement, experimentation with communal living and drugs, Futurist concepts, and a widespread expansion of freedom of self-expression and experimentation. Many observers believe this era also launched a Fourth Awakening as evangelical denominations expanded and "Jesus freaks" found religious inspiration outside mainline churches.

Which changed the world, of course. Those darn hippies!

The nation is wallowing self-piteously in a fetid trough of denial and adolescent rage/magical thinking now that the nation's bogus, debt-based "prosperity" has crashed and cannot be restored, though the visible state (Federal Reserve and elected officials) keep trying to glue Humpty Dumpty back back together again.

The Deep State has been busy powering up the immense machinery of full spectrum repression to contain the inevitable disarray that will follow the collapse of the nation's bogus, debt-based "prosperity."

Our best hope for a productive outcome is that the cadre of those inside the Deep State Network who grasp the self-defeating nature of repression will gain influence over their repression-obsessed peers.
