magazine on Friday apologized for its November story about an alleged 2012 gang rape at a University of Virginia fraternity.

e Managing Editor Will Dana said there were "discrepancies" in the account given by a woman identified as "Jackie" of an assault by seven men at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house.

"In the face of new information, there now appear to be discrepancies in Jackie's account, and we have come to the conclusion that our trust in her was misplaced," Dana said in a note to readers.

"We were trying to be sensitive to the unfair shame and humiliation many women feel after a sexual assault and now regret the decision to not contact the alleged assaulters to get their account.

"We are taking this seriously and apologize to anyone who was affected by the story," Dana said.

The story created turmoil at the university and drew national attention to the issue of campus sexual assault. The article prompted a local police probe and the appointment of an independent investigator by the state attorney general.
