Heavy equipment will be needed to repair a broken sewer main in Corpus Christi blamed for a sinkhole that's forced traffic to be diverted until next month.

The city utilities department reported Thursday that gap has been secured with steel plates and barricades.

The sinkhole, estimated to be about 10-feet across, opened Monday on busy Port Avenue.

Officials blame a broken sewer main, at a depth of about 17 feet, for causing the hole that filled with water amid recent rains. Experts blame the aging infrastructure for the collapse.

City officials say an excavation contractor will do repairs that should start May 4, weather permitting.

Utilities spokesman Bill Mahaffey says the department has completed video inspection of the main. Pumps have been set up to bypass the damaged section.
